Choose Calculate Margin to find the profit margin and markup from a known cost and selling price. Choose Selling Price when you know your cost and want to find the price needed for a specific margin. Choose Find Cost to determine the maximum you can pay for an item while maintaining your target margin.
Profit is simply Selling Price minus Cost. However, expressing profit as a percentage can be done two ways:
| Metric | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | — | $70 |
| Selling Price | — | $100 |
| Profit | SP − Cost | $30 |
| Profit Margin | Profit ÷ SP × 100 | 30% |
| Markup | Profit ÷ Cost × 100 | 42.86% |
Notice that a 30% margin is not the same as a 30% markup. A 30% margin on a $100 sale means $30 profit, but a 30% markup on a $70 cost means only $21 profit ($70 × 0.30). Confusing the two leads to underpricing or overpricing.

Profit margin is profit divided by selling price (Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100). Markup is profit divided by cost (Profit ÷ Cost × 100). For example, buying at $70 and selling at $100 gives a 30% margin but a 42.86% markup.
Profit Margin = ((Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Selling Price) × 100. Enter your cost and selling price in the calculator to get the result instantly.
Selling Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin ÷ 100). Switch to 'Calculate Selling Price' mode, enter your cost and target margin, and the calculator does the rest.
No. Profit margin is always less than 100% because margin is profit divided by selling price — profit can never exceed the selling price itself. Markup, however, can exceed 100%.

This calculator computes gross margin (revenue minus cost of goods sold, divided by revenue). Net margin would require subtracting all operating expenses, taxes, and interest — which varies by business.
